Kwinana Battery Energy Storage System (KBESS2): Powering Western Australia’s Future
In late 2024, Western Australia’s Kwinana Battery Energy Storage System (KBESS2) began operations, marking a significant milestone in sustainable energy storage. Situated at the Kwinana Power Station, KBESS2 is Synergy’s second large-scale battery project within the South West Interconnected System (SWIS), with a capacity of 200MW/800MWh. This facility strengthens WA’s renewable energy capabilities by enabling efficient storage and grid integration.
Teck Global played a pivotal role in the project, leveraging its solution design, engineering and integration expertise to deliver eight outdoor kiosk substations designed to withstand the site’s demanding coastal conditions. With challenges like dust, salt-laden winds, high temperatures, and humidity, our solution featured custom-built, corrosion-proof enclosures, ring main unit (RMU) kiosks, outdoor battery racks, and inverters.
The KBESS2 project not only achieved on-time and on-budget delivery but also prioritised local sourcing. The majority of components were procured and assembled through a local supply chain, supporting Australian businesses and showcasing WA’s advanced manufacturing capabilities.
